There’s a legend that once pirates tried to conquer the Italian village of Tellaro on a night in 1660 during fog and a bad thunderstorm. The bell tower of St. George church was typically used to alarm the town in case of danger, but that night the watchman had fallen asleep! However, when the pirates disembarked, the bell began to toll anyway, and the villagers were awakened in time to save the town. It was discovered that a giant octopus had climbed the tower and rang the bell, so to this day, the octopus is the symbol of Tellaro!

This scenic seaside village looks out towards Cinque Terre.
