When I arrived at St. Mark's square in Venice and stopped at the water's edge looking at this scene, my 1st thoughts were of Claude Monet and that he stood in this same spot. It was exhilarating. After painting this, I looked over one of my Monet books and brushed up on his Venice trip. His original plan was not to paint while he was there, feeling it was "overdone". However, as soon as he arrived he understandably changed his mind. Most of the time he was there, the weather didn't cooperate with him and he had to paint under a tarp while in a gondola in the freezing cold. His time there was extended through December because of this.
